PBS in Vermont

Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) is a system wide approach to preventing and improving behaviors in classrooms and schools.

The PBS framework is based on the scientifically supported idea that successful student functioning in all environments requires a set of behavioral skills that are only developed through instruction, reinforcement, and practice.

PBS focuses its efforts on three levels of prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary.  Primary prevention focuses on all students, staff, and settings within the school.  Secondary prevention focuses on prevention efforts for students at risk, and tertiary prevention focuses on those students with the greatest need for behavior modification and support.

Systematic implementation of PBS has shown to benefit schools in many ways, including drops in suspension rates, improved school climate, and decreases in classroom disruptions.

The commissioner of education for the state of Vermont has established PBS as a priority for Vermont schools.
