Depression

Depression is a genuine medical condition that affects people of all ages, including children and teens.  Depression causes a person to feel persistently sad, hopeless and/or disinterested in daily activities.  Depression is a debilitating condition that can dramatically interfere with every aspect of a child's or teen's life, including his or her ability to function in school.

Depression left untreated has serious consequences.  Depression is not something that a person can simply "snap out of". Children and teens with depression rarely seek support on their own, often relying on parents, teachers, or other caregivers to recognize their suffering and help them to get the treatment that they need.  Fortunately, depression is a treatable illness with frequently positive outcomes if it is identified early and appropriate treatment is received.
